Habits vs. Awareness

HR Download - Training & Development, Times Ascent | 26 August 2010 | Purnima

Think of your daily activities. How many of that is a conscious choice? How many of those are routine, mechanical habits, which you are unconscious of? How many times do your fingers hit on the keys of your computer while your mind takes a detour into different realms? How much is sipping your coffee or glancing through a journal done consciously? If we could be honest with ourselves in answering these questions, it would be our wake up call to live life differently.
Anything we do over and over again precipitates a habit. Observations show that whenever people became mechanical and robotic in their work without bringing attention to whatever they were doing, there was stagnation in their performance. There were even situations of relapse since there were no new perceptions or creative ideas pumped into it. This is one of the challenges corporate faces today with a lot of specialization in
every field. If work becomes a habit and there is no conscious attention brought to the work you do, then slowly over a period of time brain loses its plasticity. Greater the plasticity, greater is your ability to learn, unlearn or relearn because the brain forms fresh neural connections.

On the other hand it is impossible for us to find new situations in our workplace to keep the plasticity of our brain alive. Most of us find ourselves in a small cabin, hardly moving out for 6-8 hours a day. We are required by our boss or team lead to do a particular kind of work only. We are hired and paid to do that. How can we bring something new into our job to keep our creativity alive? It is not necessary to change our work situations to gain our creativity and intelligence. All that one needs to do is pay attention to what one is doing.

Imagine that you are taking a walk through a dense forest. The first time you go through the forest, there is much resistance to your passage through so you have to use your machete to fight your way through. However, the second time you walk through, it won't be as hard because you already started creating a pathway through the jungle on your first walk. Now, every time you walk through, you make the pathway larger and so there is less and less resistance to your walk. Eventually, the pathway will become a track, then a small road and ultimately a large road! The same happens with your brain too. When you do things the same way over and over again, the neural path-ways get stronger and stronger and psychologically your mind gets fixed to a particular way of thinking and perceiving. Awareness is the enemy of habit. It does not allow the mind to settle in its old comfortable ways of thinking and functioning. It challenges the mind to explore new possibilities, question assumptions and conclusion and arrive at new perceptions; thus preserving and enhancing your creative skills where ever you are.
