Chasing mental ghosts

I tip toe into the room, groping for light switches on the wall. I feel my hair standing on my neck and the blood rushing into my legs. I hurry. Need to find the switch quicker. I can feel an eerie presence. May be there is something in the dark trying to approach me. Very unconsciously, images from many movies flood the mind. As the fear reaches its pinnacle, I reach the switch and turn the lights on. As the warm light bathes the room, lighting up the surroundings, the ghosts disappear.
Fear – what is it? Why does it creep into you in darkness and disappear in light? Why fear at all? What is fear? What is the remedy to fear?
In a recent conversation, one of my friends asked me – why is it that fear and anger come so naturally and effortlessly to most of us, while kindness and joy seems to require training and practice?
Human biology probably holds the secret. It is true that biologically all life is designed primarily for survival. In the natural course of evolution, the lower brain or the limbic system was the first to emerge. The amygdala in the limbic system is the seat of fear, it is responsible for the flight or fight response. You find this part of the brain function in all creatures, ranging from alligators to humans.
Alligators or humans are no different in their instinct to flight or flee. However, what differentiates the human race from the rest of life forms on earth is the well developed frontal cortex. The frontal cortex is the latest in the ongoing developmental process of evolution. It has been observed that the left frontal cortex is the seat of higher faculties like awareness, choice, love, kindness, altruism and joy. (That is why you perhaps don’t find alligators being compassionate). Driven by millions of years of habit, we humans easily access fear and violence while the superior aspect of ourselves requires nurturing; since that part of our brain is only a few thousand years old.
We know fear takes away reason. It makes us withdraw or retaliate. Withdrawal and retaliation are both acts of violence, either against oneself or another, leading us to inferior destinies. How does fear take root in our consciousness? Fear is born primarily of painful past experiences. If in the beginning of your career, you were snubbed each time you presented an idea, the body and mind learn fear. Fear is a learnt reaction. Your confidence takes a beating. You become cautious for the rest of your life. In unawareness life mechanically reinforces habits. With every passing year, you reinforce the habit of fear. The effects of this habit of fear can be devastating to you and damaging to the organization.
Some organizations use fear as a strategy, which soon becomes the prevalent culture. Fear of authority seems to be the easiest way to maintain order. When fear of authority becomes popular-culture, creativity, commitment and efficiency take a beating. Fear does not allow open conversation and enquiry; the result – imperfect products and imperfect services. You lose out in a world that is accelerating everyday towards greater refinement and greater perfection.
Creating intelligent and efficient systems of communication across the length and breadth of organization is important. But for the most perfect of systems to give their results requires people who could use their left frontal cortex more than they use their amygdala.
Awareness is the light that can dispel the ghosts of fear from the human mind. Whether it is the fear of a ghost or the insecurity born because of a non-cooperative work environment, the experience is much the same. Ready-made perfect people are few and far in between. Most people have been hurt or damaged by life. Organizations looking for futures that would span many generations, need to invest energy and effort in helping heal the minds of their employees. Create a culture of self-awareness. Train people to break their habit of fear. Encourage practices that nurture positive states of mind. Bring a spiritual awareness into life. Goodness not insecurity, can take organizations to their desired destinies.
And it is possible.
